StereoWave: A Drummer's Story

6th SEPTEMBER 2008

My heartfelt thanks to all those who came to support. You people gave me one of the best nights of my life. My heartfelt thanks also to the person responsible for taking this picture.

Event: Jam Aloud 2, by NUSME
Band name: STEREOWAVE
Band no: 5
Songs Played: Ain't No Party (Orsons),
Crowds are Going Insane/No One (StereoWave/Alicia Keys)
Results: 1st Runner-Up (A contract with Ben & Jerry's)

StereoWave. A new hit in the crowd. Formed by a group of Republic Polytechnic's resident students. It was only a month ago, during the audition rounds, that we started coming together to do what our heart desires. That is music.

1 Jamming session and a few practices in school was what we had done to get ourselves prepared for the auditions. Honest opinion from me, we were so not prepared at all. Structures still weren't clear, lack of practices and all.

We wanted to play songs that would get the crowd going. For the auditions, we covered two songs. This Love by Maroon 5, and the all groovy dance hit, Sing It Back by Moloko. We made it through and here we are. This time at Scape, playing for the finals. The only prize that we really wanted was the contract with Ben & Jerry's. Sharime would have still prefered if we had won the Gibson guitar. Lets get to the main highlight, the Finals.

I would like to emphasize that it is the Finals. It simply means that this is the part where we got to be 100% ready. Ok, we kind of were mentally, but musically, again, we only had 1 proper jam session. Structures still weren't clear and remembered. I'm sorry and i apologise to some of my band members if i was abit too serious a few hours before we went on stage. I just had to make sure that everyone is on the same channel. If we were to lose, at least we could say we did our best. We even did a last min practice, vocally inside Scape while waiting for the other 4 bands to play. The band before us was Quasimodo, and i think everyone agrees, they are darn good. Lets face it, their band is thight, their music was good. They had stage presence. They had it all. Even as a competitor, i would say they really deserve to be the Winner, which in fact they did.

It was raining again that night. Somehow, i thought maybe the rain would be a blessing for the band. It rained when we were on the way to our auditions, and it rained again today before we could make our way to the stage. Just before the show, i was all ready to get the show going. When we got on stage, that was exactly what we did.

Personally, i really can't believe that i would be playing in a Finals of a competition. The feeling was great. But that night, it was not all about wanting to win the prize, or it was not just about the music anymore. It was also about feelings and emotions.

The night before:
I spread the word about the Finals, hoping that my dear friends would come and support me andmy band. Sadly, i started to hear people telling me they could not make it. On msn, people's PM also saying that they could not make it. Yussy, also told me she can't make it. Only Yanie said she would come but after watching her hip-hop show thing. Yup, definately there was that bit of sadness, but i just could not let it affect my performance the next day.

The Morning:
I woke up early. We were suppose to meet up in EMP room first in school before we head on to Scape. Before i left home, i don't know why but i just told myself that I would bring the CareBear with me, and i pray that she would come, and so would the rest of my Iban Jiwerr and B.E friends.

I also promised myself that, if really she did come down, i would give that CareBear to her.

The NIGHT:
It was raining, my mind all focused on the performance, Fadila was there. Furthermore she knew most of my band members, or maybe all. After getting all prepared to do a kickass performance, i just felt that there was something missing. Shawn had his friends came down, John and Sharime both had their girlfriend down. WenXun also had his friend came down to support. Now, that leaves it with only me. Who i had to come down and support? Not really anyone. Except for Yanie who messaged me saying she was on the way.

OK, the band name is out, the introduction is out, time to get on stage. Now, this moment, this particular moment, if i could freeze it, i would. As i was walking to my drumset, suddenly i heard voices calling out my name. As most of you all know, i have bad night vision. But when i looked up, that emptiness, suddenly turned all happy and colorful and full of vibes. There they were and there she was. Yussy actually came with the rest. Which means that after the show, the CareBear would have a new caretaker. They really made my night. At that point in time, all my sadness, sorrows, troubles went away. When i saw them, all i could do was SMILE. i could not laugh, i could not cry... but all i could do was SMILE. I guess that was the biggest smile i ever had.
Yussy, Milly, Yanie, Yana Kecik, Wann, Faiz, Fai, Faizal, Daryl.

My message to everyone:

Guys and Girls, Brothers & Sisters...
I really cannot describe to you the emotions that rushed in me when i saw all of you. It was a feeling that i never felt before. On that night, those songs that i played were all dedicated to you. You people gave me one of the best nights of my life. I really don't know how to thank you all.

I love all of you! Thank you so very much, from the bottom of my deepest heart.

My message to Yussy:

Hello Jiran...
So it was you who was so called the mastermind. I really don't know how to tell you how much i really appreciate what you and the rest have done. And yes, the CareBear is sincerely from me to you. Its a promise i made to give it to you if you came. I really hoped you like it. You are just like the CareBear. Bringing a big bright SMILE to people's face. You sure put one hell of a big bright SMILE on my face. Thank you so much. You helped me picked out my hat and my shirt the night before. And also thanks for all the times you helped me in other things also.

(*hanya tuhan sahaja yang boleh menunaikan doa-doa ku... amin)

P/S: Trust and Strong. I pray you'll get your wish some day. Insya'allah.

(Milly, your camera rocks!!!)
